Ankle MRI

Achilles Tendon:

  • Does not contain a tendon sheath so when you have tendinopathy will see edema in the adjacent soft tissues

    • Posterior edema > anterior edema

  • When there is defect, want to described distance relative to the calcaneal attachment (measure the distance)

Peroneal tendons

  • Communicate with joint space

    • So when you see perifocal fluid around the tendons you need to look at volume of fluid in the joint

      • If volume of fluid in joint is alot then makes sense that there is fluid in the tendon area

      • If volume of fluid is low in joint and alot around tendon, need to question if there is another issues going on (tendinopathy)

Talus

  • When looking at talus from above (tibia’s view) draw the talus into 6 sections

  • The middle and most medial box is the most likely location for an osteochondral injury

Injury

  • The Achilles, posterior tibialis tendon and plantar fascia all work together

  • When one is injured look closely for an injury to the others

Plantar Fascia

  • Fibromatosis most likely to occur at the distal aspect of the plantar fascia

  • Plantar fasciitis most likely to occur along the more proximal aspect of the plantar fascia

Fibularis

  • Split fibularis tendon tear

  • Usually associated with a flattened posterior fibula, because the fibers abut the flat part and can’t just go forward I guess
