Meckel Scan

General

  • Congenital diverticulum secondary to fibrous degeneration of the omphalomesenteric (vitelline duct)

  • This is a true diverticulum

  • Blood supply from omphalomesenteric artery, a branch of the SMA

Meckel Scan

  • Tc-Na-Pertechnetate

  • Tracer will be taken up by gastric tissue, in this case the ectopic gastric tissue

    • But note that if this is one of the cases of meckels not caused by ectopic gastric tissue (i.e. pancreatic) it may be falsely negative

  • Images obtained

    • Immediately at 1 frame/s for 60 s

      • Then every 5-10 min for 1 hr

    • Get 30 minute dynamic images (not really sure tbh, this was the answer to a question)

      • These can then be used to make 10-15 minutes groups I guess

  • H2 blockers can be used to increase senitivity

    • Decrease secretion of gastric tissue but also increase uptake by gastric cells so will be increased tracer uptake

    • Oral - give 2 days prior

    • IV - give 1 hour prior
