Head Bones and Associated Masses

Mandible/Maxillary lesions

  • Dentigerous cyst

  • Radicular cyst

  • Ameloblastoma

  • Simple bone cyst

  • Odontogenic keratocysts

  • Stafne cyst

Ameloblastoma

  • Locally aggressive but benign mass arising from mandible > maxilla

  • 30-50 yos

    • Imaging findings

    • May see soap bubble lesions

    • Enhancing

    • Can really look like anything it seems

    • Best described as soap bubble, lytic, septated, cystic lesion

Odontogenic Myxoma

  • Mandible or Maxilla

  • 20-30s

  • Near identical to ameloblastoma

Odontogenic keratocyst

  • Locally aggressive cystic lesion of mandible/maxilla

  • 20-30 yos

  • Associated with basal cell nevus syndrome

  • Imaging findings

  • Expansile, cystic, well circumscribed cystic lesion, can be scalloped or septated

  • T1 hyper, T2 mixed, enhancing, restricts diffusion

Stafne Bone cavity

  • Cortical defect in mandible which may be filled by submandibular gland

  • Basically a piece of the mandible is just absent

  • No associated soft tissue defects
